5 Tips to Help Toddler Potty Training Go More Smoothly

Let me begin this by saying that I am NOT an expert in this field. I’m just a Mom with a recently-potty-trained toddler who wanted to share the things that helped us!

  1. Introducing the Potty Early

Once our baby was up and walking (around a year), I was sitting him on his little potty anytime Mama had to go potty. I wasn’t having him use the potty yet, but getting the general idea of what the potty was, and what it was used for helped a lot later on because it wasn’t an entirely new thing. Getting to do something that Mama was doing seemed fun for him too so that was a bonus!

2. Giving Them Choices

We always have the little potty as well as a potty seat so we can let him have the choice. It was helpful to say things like, “Come on, let’s go potty! Would you like to sit on the little potty or the big potty?!” It made him feel like he had a little more control over the situation which made it less stressful all around.

3. Special Potty-Time Books

There are so many potty training books out there! Pick a few of your kiddo’s favorite characters and keep those books in the bathroom, only to be read when it’s potty time. This was very exciting for us!

4. SO. MANY. STICKERS.

We didn’t do a reward chart, but every time he tried to use the potty, (whether he actually went or not), he got to pick some stickers! This helped him WANT to go in and at least sit and try.

5. Be Patient!

This one may seem obvious, as patience is a must for succeeding in just about every aspect of navigating parenthood. Accidents are going to happen. Learning something new can be scary, especially when it’s something that is entirely different than what you’ve done for your entire life (even if it’s only been 2 years of life). Knowing that the people you trust are in your corner and there to help you can make it less scary, and that you’re not in trouble whenever you mess up.

And as much as we’d all LOVE to be out of diapers ASAP (that’s how we felt at least), the process of helping our little guy learn something new and seeing things click for him in his own time (with small pushes toward the potty here and there) was actually kind of fun!
